Have you ever got so many calls from an unknown number that it scared the shit out of you?
It was the summer of 2016 when I broke up with my ex-girlfriend after a five-year-long relationship. The complications began about half a year before. We used to call each other but it always ended up with a bad conversation. Since then, I had a fear of getting phone calls.
I always panicked as I got calls from any unknown number because I always hoped that it’s still her. Yet, I never wanted to pick those up having the fear of fights and unhealthy conversations.
I took a break from every social media and those were the days I used to get even more calls from the unsaved numbers of my friends. They then used to think that something was surely wrong. I bought a new phone and got myself a new number.
Aarav, my bench mate in high school, was the only one who knew about my new number and the phone. I never picked up calls from anyone and simply ignored the unknown numbers but later I always used to go in a deep thought about who it could be.
“Is it my ex-girlfriend? Is it just a wrong number? Maybe a friend of mine?” But I always ended up with, “Maybe it’s her. What to do if it’s really her?” I always had the fear. Even now because of those harrowing memories, I still have the fear of getting phone calls.
August 13, 2018. The Tuesday morning, I woke up as usual, at 04:30. After having done my morning rituals, I checked my phone and caught sight of something very unusual. I had 14 missed calls from an unknown number. Somewhere in my mind, I still hoped that it was her. But how would she get my number? I was uncertain and frightened. Could there be any emergency?
I tried calling the same number time and again but it always said that the number was incorrect. I called Aarav’s home and asked him if he had given my new number to anyone. Negative. Both of us tried making a call several times but we couldn’t.
It was about 9 in the morning when I got a call from the same unknown number. I hurriedly picked it up, “The number you’re trying is currently switched off, please try again later.” Is this a practical joke? Is someone trying to scare me?
I tried searching the number on Viber, Truecaller and everywhere else but could find it no where. The bizarre thing was that it got included as a missed call even though I had picked it up. Nothing was predictable.
The number of missed calls escalated to 21 and I decided to contact the call center by myself without anyone told to find out who it really was behind all these calls. Somewhere in my mind, it was Aarav who was trying to prank me as he was the only one to know my number, ergo didn’t tell him too.
The man in charge of the service center revealed that there was no such a number. I showed him all the phone calls I got. Just then I got yet another call again from the same number. He too was shocked because according to the reports, the number was incorrect. He blocked the number from my phone and said that he would call me in the evening after the truth was found.
As I reached home, I entered the loo to freshen up. While I was doing so, I could hear my phone ringing. I thought that it was the man from the center. As I took a look at my phone, it was the same unknown number. It had now reached 26 missed calls. I was so frustrated that I switched the phone off and put it down on the table.
After a bit, I got a call again. Even when my phone was switched off, how could this be possible? Was a hacker involved? I was ignoring the ring but it was gradually getting louder and louder.
I suddenly woke up and had a look at the time. It was 04:35 and quite dark outside. My phone was ringing. I didn’t want to know whether it was a phone call or just an alarm. I found myself full of sweat on the bed. What a bad dream it was! I relaxed for some time and then checked the phone. “January 15, 2019” and below I see, “27 Missed Calls from an unknown number”.
“Uh, it’s my birthday today.”
